Create Realistic Texture Maps of Rose Flower with Photometric Scan

Updated: Oct 22

Photometric Texture Scan

Creating realistic textures is crucial in achieving natural-looking flowers, especially when using software like SpeedTree. Realistic textures add depth, detail, and authenticity to the visual representation of flowers, making them more visually appealing and believable. By accurately capturing the intricate details of real flowers, such as the texture of petals, veins, and subtle color variations, photometric scan textures can be used to enhance the realism of flower models in SpeedTree.

This post will teach you how to scan a rose leaf for use in 3D software.

1. Black Mouse Pad

A black mouse pad can be a good option for background photography. Its smooth and non-reflective surface can provide a clean and consistent backdrop for your subject. However, it's important to keep in mind that a mouse pad may not be large enough for certain types of photography.

2. Light

Using a single study light with a regular LED light. It is an inexpensive and convenient option for lighting.

3. Polarizing Filter

To have a clear texture color, it is recommended to use a polarizing filter for both the light source and the camera. This will help remove any specular and reflective elements.

4. A Holder

To create a holder for a polarized filter on a study light, you can use 3D printing technology. This will allow you to design and print a custom holder that fits securely onto your light. Simply create a 3D model of the holder using 3D software, Solid Works, or CAD, and then print it using a 3D printer. This will enable you to attach the polarized filter to your study light, making it easier to adjust the light's brightness. Overall, 3D printing can be a great solution.

5. Setup Your Tripod, Camera, and Light

To start photography, set up the camera on a tripod and place the lighting and mouse pad on the ground. Consider adjusting the position of the camera and lighting to achieve the desired shot.

6. Light angle

To capture a non-reflective shot in a dark room, take 8 pictures every 45 degrees light.

Rotate the polarized filter on the camera or light holder when you change the light position to have a non-reflective photo. However, be careful not to move the camera while doing so.

7. All of the Photos

8 light angle leafimages

You now have 8 non-reflective photos of a leaf against a black background that is easy to mask and edit.

8. Make an Albedo or Diffuse Map in Photoshop

create albedo map in photoshop with lighting mode in layers

To get a flat Albedo image without any shadows or highlights, simply select all imported images and set the lighting mode.

9. Create Opacity Map (Masking)

Select the Color Range tool then pick a black area

To remove noise, use the Magic Wand Tool to select the leaf, then invert the selection and Expand the selection by 1 Pixel after that fill it with black color.

10. Create a Normal Map

We use Adobe 3D Sampler to create a normal map with Multiangle to material template

Drag and drop or import All 8 images into Adobe 3D Sampler.

My first image's light angle was 0 degrees so I change the first input light angle to 0 and set it clockwise, next increased normal intensity to 2, and balance set to 0 for the strongest normal map.

adobe 3d sampler multiangle template

Click on Add Layer

adobe 3d sampler multiangle template atlas creator

Select the Atlas Creator layer to assign an opacity map to your leaf.

adobe 3d sampler multiangle template

Click on edit opacity details and import an opacity map.

Finally, Change the resolution to 4096 x 4096 then right-click on the image and save a Normal map.

Now we have Albedo, Normal, and Opacity maps
